What is Art Psychotherapy?

Art therapy is a branch of psychotherapy that is used to understand emotional and psychological problems, and gain an understanding of them. Art therapy makes full use of a client’s ability to project inner thoughts and emotions, allowing him or her to express him or herself symbolically through art. It has long been documented that art is one means of expressing oneself, often healing in its own right. Paired with the insight of an art therapist, who serves as a guide for self exploration, deeper healing can occur. No artistic requirement or background is needed, as the art process together with the art serves as a creative, spontaneous, and authentic tap into verbal and non verbal expressions. In this way, art therapy can uncover the hidden problems that may be deeply stored, increase self awareness and self esteem, resolve emotional conflict, and enhance social interactions. Art therapy is especially effective with individuals who find it difficult to express themselves verbally, such as children and adolescents, or for those who are highly resistant to verbal psychotherapy.
